The “What’s in a Name” Project builds on a Community Engaged Learning and Teaching (CELT) initiative in Dr. Anne-Marie Singh’s under-grad criminology course - CRM 206 Race, Ethnicity and Justice - of Fall 2021. Envisaged by Dr. Singh (Criminology Department), in collaboration with Dr. Reena Tandon (CELT, Faculty of Arts), the course-based CELT project encouraged students to explore the lived realities of race and racism in Toronto. Drawing inspiration from existing interventions to recover the histories of the city landscape that have been ignored or erased, the CELT initiative focused on who is remembered and on practices of commemoration. Students worked independently and in groups to research the names of particular spaces or places associated with the University. They were supported in their research by Rosalynn MacKenzie (Archival Technician) and Olivia Wong (Special Collections Curatorial Specialist) from TMU Libraries’ Archives and Special Collections.
Acknowledgements
Funding by the Faculty of Arts’ Experiential Learning Grant enabled the hiring of 3 undergraduate criminology students - 1 of whom was in the CRM206 course - to develop and refine the research materials derived from the class-based CELT initiative. The Grant also supported the creation of this website.
The “What’s In a Name” Project would not have been possible without the enthusiastic collaboration between staff, faculty members and students at the Faculty of Arts and the Library, TMU. Their dedication, insight and creativity are gratefully acknowledged.
